Question
Question: Define sulphur granules....
Define sulphur granules.
Solution
Hint: They are found in the cases of the infections which are done by the Actinomycetes species and are associated with leakage of the pus from bones or the muscles.
Complete answer:
A rare bacterial disease which is highly infectious is found which is caused by Actinomycetes species and is known as Actinomycosis. It has been seen that in the cases of serious infections, the actinomycetes can even penetrate the surrounding bone and muscle which are connected directly to the skin, and there these species firstly break open and then are responsible for leaking large amounts of pus. This pus is often seen to contain the characteristic granules which are called sulfur granules and they are filled with progeny of the bacteria.
These granules are called as sulfur granules due to their appearance only but they do not actually are composed of element sulfur whereas pure elemental sulfur acts as a vital secondary macronutrient that is needed to be applied to soils that are deficient in sulfur or in those places where it is essential for lowering the pH for acid loving plants.
Sulfur granules can also be defined as the aggregates or groups of microorganisms which are found to be admixed with the inflammatory debris which are characteristically but not exclusively found to be present in actinomycosis.
Sulfur granules may vary in color from white to yellow and their size ranges from 0.25 to 2 mm in diameter. Sulfur granules may be found to be absent or sometimes seem to be poorly organized in an occasional case of actinomycosis.
Note: Sulfur granules as the name suggests sulphur should not be confused that it will contain sulphur, the name is so because of their yellow colored appearance.
