There are many examples of resonance in our daily lives. Musical instruments are the best examples of resonance which we observe around us. When a person hits any musical instrument like drums, the instrument oscillates or vibrates at the natural frequency of vibration of the instrument. Each frequency of vibration is defined by a unique standing wave pattern. These natural frequencies of musical instruments are called the harmonics of that specific instrument. Incase if a second interconnected instrument oscillates or vibrates at that specified frequency then the first object can be forced to vibrate at a frequency that is higher than its natural harmonic frequency. This phenomenon is usually called resonance.

The tendency of a mechanical system to respond at a greater amplitude whenever the frequency of its oscillations match with the system’s natural frequency of vibration is called mechanical resonance.
