Question
Question: Define open and closed type of circulatory systems....
Define open and closed type of circulatory systems.
Solution
The Circulatory system of an organism simply means an organ system (or also called a vascular system) which is responsible for transporting blood to all body parts. Its main role is to supply oxygen, hormones, nutrients like electrolyte or amino acids, carbon dioxide, and blood cells to the tissues and vice versa. It has a main role in nourishment, maintaining body temperature, fighting diseases, and maintaining homeostasis. Depending on the way of blood flow they are open and closed types.
Complete answer:
As discussed above, all multicellular organisms have circulatory systems to transport nutrients and oxygen to the body. We can divide circulatory system into two types:
Open type circulatory system:
In this kind of circulation, the blood is permitted to flow free through the cavities of the body since there are no vessels found for carrying blood systematically. The blood and interstitial fluid cannot be differentiated in this kind of circulation. Blood comes in direct contact with tissues of the body and the flow is also slow. This type is found mainly in molluscs and arthropods.
Closed type circulatory system:
In this system the blood pumped through the body is separate from the interstitial fluid and pumped through the vessels.
Look at yourself, we humans also have a closed type of circulation. Interstitial fluid and the blood can be easily differentiated. The heart pumps the blood through the vessels. The closed spaces are arteries and veins which carry blood in the body. Blood does not direct contact with the body tissues. Gases are also transported in a systematic way through blood. The flow of blood is also rapid. This type of system is found in mammals and higher vertebrates, and some invertebrates.
Additional information:
Cardiovascular diseases are diseases of the cardiovascular system. They can also be referred to as Lifestyle diseases because they develop over time and depend on a person's lifestyle, diet, habits etc. Major cardiovascular disease involves Clot formation, also referred to as thrombus. They appear in arteries of vein. Thrombus may embolize and travel to other locations and may result in stroke, pulmonary embolism etc.
Note: The circulatory system is an important organ system for the body to transport gases, nutrients, hormones and more. You can easily memorize open and closed types of circulatory systems by their names. Open meaning no vessels and open cavity for flow, whereas closed meaning blood flows in closed spaces called blood vessels.
