In racemose inflorescence, flowers develop in acropetal succession i.e., mature flowers are towards the base the younger comes towards the tip of the peduncle. In epigynous flowers, the sepals, petals and stamens are
successively and separately inserted above the ovary in the flower. The ovary in this situation is said to be inferior, e.g., guava, cucumber. But when the sepals, petals and stamens are successively and separately inserted below the ovary in the flowers, the condition is described as hypogyny. The
ovary in this situation is said to be superior. Such flowers are termed hypogynous as in mustard, China rose and brinjal.
