Chemistry Question on The solid state

Consider the bccbcc unit cells of the solids 11 and 22 with the position of atoms as shown below. The radius of atom BB is twice that of atom AA. The unit cell edge length is 50%50\% more in solid 22 than in 11. What is the approximate packing efficiency in solid 22 ?

A

0.45

B

0.65

C

0.9

D

0.75

Answer

0.9

Explanation

Solution

% packing efficiency =Vol.occupied by atomVol. of unit cell×100=43πr3a3×100= \frac{\text{Vol.occupied by atom}}{\text{Vol. of unit cell}}\times100=\frac{\frac{4}{3}\pi r^{3}}{a^{3}}\times100
Let radius of corner atom is r and radius of central atom is 2r
So, 3a=2(2r)+2r=6r\sqrt{3}a=2\left(2r\right)+2r=6r
a=6r3=23ra=\frac{6r}{\sqrt{3}}=2\sqrt{3}r
Now
% P.E =43πr3+43π(2r)3(23r)3×100=\frac{\frac{4}{3}\pi r^{3}+\frac{4}{3}\pi\left(2r\right)^{3}}{\left(2\sqrt{3}r\right)^{3}}\times100
=43π(r3+8r3)8×33r3×100=\frac{\frac{4}{3}\pi\left(r^{3}+8r^{3}\right)}{8\times3\sqrt{3}r^{3}}\times100
=4π×9r33×8×33r3×100=90.6%90%=\frac{4\pi\times9r^{3}}{3\times8\times3\sqrt{3}r^{3}}\times100=90.6\%\approx90\%
