Question
Question: Complete the following chemical reactions: a) \(Mn{O_2} + 4HCl \to \) b) \(Xe{F_6} + KF \to \)...
Complete the following chemical reactions:
a) MnO2+4HCl→
b) XeF6+KF→
Solution
The reactants in all the reactions include manganese oxide, hydrochloric acid, xenon hexafluoride and potassium fluoride. Manganese oxide has several polymorphs and also hydrated forms.
Complete answer:
a) MnO2+4HCl→MnCl2+2H2O+Cl2
Manganese oxide reacts with hydrochloric acid to form manganese chloride and chlorine gas. Manganese oxide is an organic compound and it naturally occurs as mineral pyrolusite and it is blackish or brown solid. It is the main ore of manganese. The main use of manganese oxide is for dry cell batteries. In the preparation of potassium permanganate, manganese oxide is used as a precursor. Manganese oxide is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. The use of manganese oxide is also as an inorganic pigment in ceramics and in glass making.
Even manganese chloride is used in the production of dry cell batteries. Like many manganese salts, these salts are pink.
b) XeF6+KF→K[XeF7]
Xenon hexafluoride reacts with potassium fluoride and the fluoride ion binds to xenon hexafluoride and forms K[XeF7]. Xenon hexafluoride is the strongest fluorinating agent of XeF2 and XeF4. Xenon hexafluoride is a colourless solid and xenon hexafluoride readily suppliers into intensely yellow vapours. Potassium fluoride here is the source of fluoride ion.
Note:
The other uses of manganese oxide include amine oxidation, thiol oxidation, aromatization and oxidation coupling. The other use of manganese chloride is synthesizing antiknock compounds. Xenon hexafluoride is prepared with the help of xenon and fluorine in the ratio of 1:5. In xenon hexafluoride, there is one lone pair on the xenon atom.
