Question
Biology Question on cell cycle and cell division
Chromosomes start pairing in which stage of meiosis?
A
Leptotene
B
Zygotene
C
Pachytene
D
Diplotene
Answer
Zygotene
Explanation
Solution
Zygotene is the sub-stage of prophase-I in which two homologous chromosomes get attached to each other laterally due to development of nucleoprotein complex between them. Pairing between chromosomes occurs such that the genes of the same character present on the two chromosomes come to lie exactly opposite. The process of attachment of the homologous chromosomes is known as synapsis (or syndesis). During this process, chromosomes form pairs or bivalents.
