Choose the correct answer from the four options given below.
Chromosomes get aligned at the centre of the cell during
A. Metaphase
B. Anaphase
C. Prophase
D. Telophase
Solution
During Mitosis cell division, the parent cells divide into two identical cells. The main purpose of mitosis is to maintain the growth and side by side to replace the worn cells as well. Any mistakes that happen during mitosis cell division can cause the change in DNA structure which results in genetic disorders in offspring.
Complete answer:
1. The entire process of Mitosis cell division can be grouped into five phases. They are: Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase.
2. In Interphase, the DNA cells are copied so that one set of fully identical chromosomes are created. That is, from two parent chromosomes four corresponding identical chromosomes are born. During this phase, microtubules are going to extend from the centrosomes which stay outside of the nucleus.
3. During Prophase, the chromosomes are getting to condense into X-shaped structures. At the end of prophase, the nuclear membrane is going to dissolve so that the chromosomes can be released.
4. In Metaphase, the chromosomes are going to line up neatly end-to-end along the equator of the cell. The centrioles which are released from the centrosomes reach at the opposite poles from each other with the mitotic spindle fibres releasing from them.
5. During Anaphase, the mitotic spindles are then active to pull apart the sister chromatids as by the help of fibres, one centriole pulls one chromatid toward one pole and another one pulls another chromatid to another pole.
6. In Telophase, a full set of chromosomes now can assemble together. The single cell then pinches in the middle in order to form two separate daughter cells where each of them contains a full set of chromosomes inside their nucleus.
7. Thus, we can understand from this above narration that during Metaphase, the chromosomes get aligned at the centre of the cells.
Hence the correct answer is option ‘A’.
Note: The meaning of mitosis is ‘threads.’It refers to those spindle fibres as created during the end of Metaphase. They are also called tubules or microtubules which are extended from the centrosomes located in each pole of the parent cell.
