Question: Can we react to Salicylic acid with ph-OH?...

Can we react to Salicylic acid with ph-OH?

Explanation

Solution

Salicylic acid is known as beta hydroxy acid. The ph-OH is known as phenol. The reaction of salicylic acid with phenol can lead to the formation of salol which is also known as phenyl salicylate. It was first synthesized in 1883 and is used in the manufacturing of polymers, waxes and adhesives.

Complete Step By Step Solution:
The heating reaction of salicylic acid with phenol produces phenyl salicylate. The reaction is given as-
The phenyl salicylate formed is known as salol. It is the phenyl ester of salicylic acid i.e. known as benzoate ester. It is used for demonstrating the effect of cooling rates on the size of crystals in igneous rocks. Its IUPAC name is Phenyl 2-hydroxybenzoate. Its chemical formula is C13H10O3{{C}_{13}}{{H}_{10}}{{O}_{3}}. It appears as white solid with molar mass of around 21422214\cdot 22 g/mole. Salol is also used as an antiseptic.
The dilute solution of phenol has a pH of around 5-6. It is a weak acid because it has the ability to lose hydrogen ions to form phenoxide ions. The benzene ring is attached directly to the hydroxyl group which makes it an electron withdrawing group. Phenol is found in sunscreen, lotions, toothpaste, hand wash, etc. Phenols are more acidic than alcohols. The addition of dilute sulfuric acid increases the acidity of phenols. There is high concentration of phenolic compounds present in tea and coffee because they contribute aroma and flavor to tea and coffee and also have bioactive antioxidant properties. It is also used as disinfectant to kill bacteria by inactivating their enzyme systems.

Note: Salol can be made from phenol by reacting it with sodium hydroxide to get the sodium phenoxide ion. Then it is reacted with dilute hydrochloric acid to make it salool. Salol can also be prepared from salicylic acid and methyl alcohol. There is also a principle known as Salol Principle according to which salol as an ester formed by combining the toxic substances like phenol and salicylic acid hydrolyzes in the intestine to give its antiseptic actions.
