Briefly explain the function of the uterus.
Solution
Uterus is related to the female reproductive part.
Complete Answer:
Uterus is also called a womb which is an inverted pear-shaped muscular organ of the female reproductive system and it is located between the bladder and the rectum. The main function of the uterus is to nourish and house a fertilized egg until the fetus (offspring) is ready to be delivered.
There are four regions in the uterus which includes the fundus broad curved area through which fallopian tubes are connected to the uterus (broad curved upper area in which the fallopian tubes connect to the uterus); body (main part) ; isthmus (lower, narrow neck region) and lastly lowest section which is cervix (extends downward which opens through vaginal orifice).
Endometrium is the inner layer of the uterus which provides lining to it and in this implantation takes place. The lining changes in thickness during the menstrual cycle, being thickest during the period of egg release from the ovaries called ovulation. If the egg is fertilized, it attaches to the thick endometrial wall of the uterus and begins developing. If the egg is unfertilized, the endometrial wall sheds its outer layer of cells; the egg and excess tissue are then passed from the body during menstrual bleeding. The endometrium helps in keeping both egg and sperm alive by secretion. Uterus is one of the slight heavier parts. Before puberty, the female child's uterus is small and then rapidly grows to adult size.
Note: Uterus is the main part of the female because it is the site for the growth of the child and for the fertility of the woman and the whole process of the menstrual cycles is under the control of the uterus.
