Atrial and branchial apertures of Herdmania are surrounded by
A.Two lips
B.Three lips
C.Four lips
D.Five lips

Explanation

Solution

Herdmania is a marine tunicate which belongs to the pyuridae family and class Ascidiacea and mostly occurs in a gregarious form.

Complete answer:
Herdmania also known as sea squirts is a brown colored urochordate living in marine habitats and is partially buried inside the sand, The body of Herdmania shows two projections known as the atrial siphon and the branchial siphon. The atrial aperture is situated at the dorsal side of the body and contains the cloaca and the branchial aperture is situated at the anterior part of the body which represents the mouth of Herdmania. The mouth of Herdmania is known as the incurrent aperture and the cloaca is known as the excurrent aperture of Herdmania. Both the apertures are surrounded by four lips also known as lobes. The entire body of Herdmania is covered by Tunica which is made up of tunicin. The branchial aperture serves as the entry point for water which then exits from the atrial aperture after moving through the pharynx. The gaseous exchange in Herdmania takes place in branchial sacs

Option C: The atrial and the branchial aperture in Herdmania are surrounded by four lips. Therefore, this is the correct option.

All the other options are irrelevant.

Hence, the correct answer is option (C)

Note: Herdmania releases water from both the apertures when it is disturbed. herdmania shows cross-fertilization and the fertilization is external. Some species of Herdmania are Herdmania japonica, Herdmania pallida, Herdmania pinnata, Herdmania colona.
