Question
Physics Question on mechanical properties of fluid
At what speed, the velocity head of water is equal to pressure head of 40cm of Hg?
A
10.3 m/s
B
2.8 m/s
C
5.6 m/s
D
8.4 m/s
Answer
10.3 m/s
Explanation
Solution
Bernoullis equation for flowing liquid be written as
p+21ρv2+ρgh= constant ...(i)
Here, p= pressure energy per unit volume of liquid
ρ= density of liquid (water)
h= height of liquid column
v= velocity of liquid and
g= acceleration due to gravity
Dividing the E (i) by ρg, we have
ρgp+2gv2+h= constant
In this expression, 2gv2 is velocity head and ρgp is pressure head.
It is given that,
Velocity head = pressure head
ie, 2gv2=ρgp
or v2=ρ2P
or =1032×13.6×103×40×10−2×9.8
∴v=10.32m/s
