Assertion- With Br2H2OB{r_2} - {H_2}O phenol gives 2,4,6 tribromophenol but with BrCS2Br - C{S_2} it gives 4- bromophenol as the major product.
Reason- in water ionization of phenol is enhanced but in CS2C{S_2}, it is greatly suppressed.
Read the above assertion and reason and choose the correct option regarding it.
A. Both assertion and reason are correct and reason is the correct explanation for assertion.
B. Both assertion and reason are correct but reason is not correct explanation for assertion
C. Assertion is correct but assertion is incorrect
D. Assertion is incorrect but reason is correct

Explanation

Solution

Phenol is the aromatic compound in which we observe that a hydroxyl group is attached to the benzene ring. It is a solid which is crystalline and white in colour. It is extracted from the tar of coal. There are three types of phenol such as monohydric phenols, dihydric phenols and trihydric phenols. The formation of phenol can take place from sulphonic acids and diazonium salts.

Complete step by step answer:
So on reacting the phenol with the bromine water the formation of the 2,4,6 tribromophenol occurs as the bromination of phenol occurs due to ionization of water. The tendency of the bromine to get ionised into the bromonium ions is to a large extent. We see the formation of the white precipitate at the end of reaction and bromine water get decolourised. The formation of 4 bromophenol occurs as the major product on reaction of the phenol with BrCS2Br - C{S_2} because it feels no steric hindrance at the para position as in carbon disulphide being the non polar compound the ionization of phenol is suppressed.

So, the correct answer is Option A.

Note: The phenol is used as an antiseptic and for the preservation of vaccines. It helps in the manufacturing of nylon and oral analgesics. It helps in production of plastics and detergents. It is also used in manufacturing cosmetics.
