Assertion: the solubility of ammonium chloride increases with increase in temperature.
Reason: in case of substance whose solubility increases with increase in temperature is due to the dissolution process being endothermic.
A. Both assertion and reason are correct and reason is the correct explanation for assertion
B. Both assertion and reason are correct but reason is not the correct explanation for assertion
C. Assertion is correct but reason is incorrect
D. Both the assertion and reason are incorrect.
Solution
Ammonium chloride is an inorganic compound which is highly soluble in water. Solutions of ammonium chloride are mildly acidic. It is a salt formed from a neutralization reaction between a weak ammonium hydroxide base and a strong hydrochloric acid. It is also produced by the Solvay process used to produce sodium bicarbonate.
Complete step by step answer:
As we know the definition of solubility is the quantity of solute that can be dissolved in solvent at equilibrium. Generally solubility is affected by temperature factor . There are two types of reactions: one is endothermic and the other one is exothermic based upon the amount of energy required and energy released respectively. Energy release or needed is because when a chemical reaction proceeds old bonds are broken down new bonds are formed for making a new product .
Now come to the solution part: Ammonium chloride is an inorganic compound and is a neutral salt , it does not completely dissociate on adding water so on increasing the temperature the dissociation of ammonium chloride increase thus its solubility increase ,when dissolution occurs the adsorption of heat occurs which shows the reaction is an endothermic reaction , so when temperature increase the value of equilibrium constant also increased .Thus the solubility of ammonium chloride increase with increase in temperature
So, the correct answer is Option A.
Note: Solubility is a property of compound or a substance, the solute to dissolve in solvent .Solubility may be defined as the maximum amount of solute dissolve in solvent at equilibrium. Solubility of a solution depends upon temperature, pressure and other chemicals of the solution. Solubility of compound or element also depends upon its solubility product. Solubility products and solubility are directly proportional to each other.
