Solution
Infertility is the failure to conceive even after 1-2 years of regular unprotected sex. It is of two types- primary and secondary infertility. Primary infertility is, if the patients have never conceived while secondary infertility occurs in patients who have previously conceived.
Complete solution:
Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) helps infertile couples in receiving eggs/sperms from gonads,
bringing about artificial insemination and development of embryos, etc. The various procedures of ART
are:
IVF-ET- In-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer
GIFT- Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer
ZIFT- Zygote Intrafallopian transfer
IUT- Intrauterine transfer
ICSI- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
GIFT- It involves transfer of an ovum collected from the donor into the fallopian tube (GIFT) of another
female who cannot produce one, but can provide suitable environment for fertilization and further
development.
AI (Artificial Insemination) - If the infertility of the male is either due to inability of male partner to achieve an erection of penis to inseminate the female or due to very low sperm count in the semen, it is corrected by artificial insemination. In this, semen collected from the husband or donor is artificially introduced either into the vagina or into the uterus of the female.
ICSI- In this, the sperm of the male partner is placed inside the egg with a microscopic needle in a dish in
a lab. It is different from IVF as that involves many sperms positioned close to the outside of the egg.
So, the right option is D.
Additional Information: IVF- ET- This is the most commonly used procedure in which eggs are combined with partner’s sperm in a dish in a laboratory. In this, ova from wife/donor and sperm from husband/donor are induced to form the zygote under the simulated conditions in the laboratory. The zygote or early embryo with up to eight blastomeres could then be transferred into the fallopian tube (ZIFT) and the embryos with more than eight blastomeres into the uterus (Intrauterine transfer) to complete its further development.
Note: ART procedures are invasive and expensive. Although no long-term health effects have been linked to children born using these procedures, most doctors recommend ART as a last resort for having a baby.
