Question
Physics Question on Electric Charges and Coulomb's Law
An infinite line charge produces a field of 9×104NC−1at a distance of 2 cm. Calculate the linear charge density.
Answer
Electric field produced by the infinite line charges at a distance d having linear charge density λ is given by the relation,
E=2πε0dλ
λ=2πε0dE
Where, d = 2 cm = 0.02 m
E=9×104NC−1
ε0 = Permittivity of free space and 4πε01=9×109Nm2C−2
Therefore,
λ=2×9×1090.02×9×104
=10µCm−1
Therefore, the linear charge density is 10µCm−1.
