An anti freeze mixture cannot freeze regardless of the temperature:
A.True
B.False
Solution
An antifreeze causes depression in the freezing point. The magnitude of depression depends upon the amount of impurities mixed in it.Depression in freezing point is a colligative property.
Complete step by step answer:
Antifreeze lowers the freezing point of a water based mixture. It is related to the colligative property known as depression in freezing point. Since we all know water has a good coolant property. So water along with antifreeze is used in the engines and other appliances. In case of water, the solid water that is ice has more volume than liquid water because of the case like structure of ice. Hence water alone is used as coolant and due to lower temperature it freezes out, it will expand and can cause bursting in vehicles or engines. Hence the work of antifreeze is to prevent water from freezing by decreasing the freezing point. Clearly water alone cannot be used as coolant, so we wanted something which can decrease the freezing point. We have studied in colligative properties that salt solution also decreases the freezing point but we cannot take them because they are highly corrosive in nature. Solution or organic compound with water is widely used as coolant. Especially alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, glycol etc are used as antifreeze mixture.
If no corrosion element is present then, antifreeze mixture does not freeze unless the required freezing temperature reaches. So, the statement is false that an anti-freeze mixture cannot freeze regardless of the temperature.
Hence option B is correct.
Note:
Antifreeze solutions are widely used as engine coolants. Most common antifreeze solution is ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. Other additives are also added to the antifreeze such as sodium silicate, disodium phosphate, sodium molybdate etc.
