All halogen alkanes contain a halogen atom-fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine attached to a/an ______ group.
A.Alkyl
B.Aryl
C.Benzyl
D.Benzylic
Solution
Halo alkanes:- The compound containing carbon, hydrogen and one or more halogen atoms are known as Halo alkanes. The compounds are also known as alkyl halide. The term “Halogen” refers to an element that belongs to halogen group or group 17 (fluorine (F), Chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) and iodine (I) of elements in the periodic table.
Complete step by step answer:
First we will discuss the chemistry of Haloalkanes.
In the Haloalkanes molecule each carbon atom forms a single covalent bond between itself and another carbon atom to form a parent alkane molecule. The hydrogen atom present in the parent alkane molecules in Haloalkanes are replaced with halogen atoms. The preferred systematic IUPAC name for straight chain is made up of prefix and stem like in Haloalkanes - halo (prefix) and alkane (stem naming).
Stem is determined by the number of carbon atoms making up the long carbon chain which include halogen atoms in place of hydrogen .
Prefix is determined by the number and type of halogen atoms that occur along with the parent chain and is made up of three parts: infix, multiplier and modified halogen name.
Infix is determined the location of halogen atom the carbon chain like
CH3−CH2−Br. or H3CF−CH3
Multiplier precedes the name of halogen atom if two or more halogen atoms present in the parent carbon chain like di, tri, tetra etc.
Modified naming is used in prefix, and is constructed by dropping the “one” in the ending of the halogens name.
So option (A) is correct .
Note:
In Haloalkanes, halogen is attached to the alkyl group and alkanes is also known as alkyl group. If halogen is attached to aryl or benzyl group so the IUPAC names of the compound formed will be haloarene and benzyl halide.
