Question

Physics Question on mechanical properties of solids

A wire elongates by lmm l \,mm when a load w is hanged from it. If the wire goes over a pulley and two weights w each are hung at the two ends, the elongation of the wire will be (in mm):

A

ll

B

2 ll

C

zero

D

ll /2

Answer

ll

Explanation

Solution

Let us consider the length of wire as LL and cross-sectional area AA, the material of wire has Young's modulus as YY.

Then for 1st1\,st case, Y=w/AVLY=\frac{w / A}{V L}
For 2nd2\,nd case, Y=w/A2l/LY=\frac{w / A}{2 l^{'} / L}
l=l2\therefore l^{'}=\frac{l}{2}
So, total elongation of both sides =2l=l=2 l^{'}=l
