Hotspots- The hotspots are the richest and most threatened reservoirs of the plant and animal life on the earth. The two criteria that determine a hotspot are- number of endemic species in an area and the degree of threat to them.
Protected areas- These are the biogeographical areas where biological diversity along with natural and cultural resources is protected, maintained and managed through legal or other effective measures. National parks, sanctuaries and biosphere reserves come under the category of protected areas.
The benefits of such areas are:
- It helps in maintaining the genetic diversity of all the present species and varieties.
- It helps in maintaining the viable populations of the native species, subspecies and varieties.
- It helps in maintaining the resilience in species, habitats and ecosystems to adapt to environmental changes.
- It also helps in checking human aided introduction of alien exotic species.

Note:- However it is not economically feasible to conserve all biological wealth and all the existing ecosystems. The number of species required to be saved from extinction are far more than the conservation resources.
