Question

Mathematics Question on Time Speed and Distance

A train after travelling 150 km meets with an accident and then proceeds at 35\frac{3}{5} of its former speed and arrives at its destination 8 hours late. Had the accident occurred 360 km further, it would have reached the destination 4 hours late. What is the total distance travelled by the train ?

A

960 km

B

870 km

C

840 km

D

1100 km

Answer

870 km

Explanation

Solution

Assume the speed of the train be v km/hr and the total distance travelled by the train be d kms and the time taken to reach the destination if no accident occured is t hours.

150v\frac{150}{v} + d-1500.6v\frac{150}{0.6v} = t + 8 — Equation 1

510v\frac{510}{v} + d-5100.6v\frac{510}{0.6v} = t + 4 — Equation 2

After solving the above equations, we get:
After subtracting the equation 1 from equation 2 we get,
d = 870 kms
The correct option is (B)
