where kk is force constant or spring constant of spring and xx is the extension or compression in spring.
k=Fx\Rightarrow k=\frac{F}{x}
or k1xk \propto \frac{1}{x}
or k1k2=x2x1...(ii)\frac{k_{1}}{k_{2}}=\frac{x_{2}}{x_{1}}\,\,\,...(ii)
If spring is divided in two parts, then
x1=x,x2=x2,k1=kx_{1}=x, x_{2}=\frac{x}{2}, k_{1}=k
kk2=x/2x\therefore \frac{k}{k_{2}}=\frac{x / 2}{x}
or k2=2kk_{2}=2 k
Hence, spring constant will be doubled.
