Question

Biology Question on Transport in Plants

A plant cell shrinks in hypertonic solution. In hypertonic solution, water moves out of the cells due to plasmolysis.

A

If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion

B

If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion

C

If assertion is true but reason is false

D

If both assertion and reason are false

Answer

If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion

Explanation

Solution

The behaviour of the plant cells or tissues with regard to water movement depends on the surrounding solution. When the cell or tissue is placed in a hypertonic solution, water moves out; it is first lost from the cytoplasm and then from the vacuole. The water when drawn out of the cell through diffusion into the extracellular (outside cell) fluid causes the protoplast to shrink away from the walls. The cell is said to be plasmolysed.
