Question
Physics Question on Wave optics
A plane polarized light is incident on a polariser with its pass axis making angle ? with x-axis, as shown in the figure. At four different values of θ,θ=8∘,38∘,188∘ and 218∘, the observed intensities are same. What is the angle between the direction of polarization and x-axis ?
A
98∘
B
128∘
C
203∘
D
45∘
Answer
203∘
Explanation
Solution
According to Malus law, we have
I=I0cos2θ⇒I0I=cos2θ
Since the observed intensities are same for all values of θ,
therefore, for the angles given in options, the observed intensity
should be same as well for all θ,θ=8∘,38∘,188∘ and 218∘,I0I∼0.9
and for θ=203∘,II∼0.9.
Therefore, angle between direction of polarisation and x axis is 203∘.
