Question

Physics Question on Ray optics and optical instruments

A microscope is focused on a coin lying at the bottom of a beaker. The microscope is now raised up by 1cm1 cm. To what depth should the water be poured into the beaker so that coin is again in focus? (Refractive index of water is 43\frac{4}{3} )

A

15cm15\,cm

B

12cm12\,cm

C

10cm10\,cm

D

4cm4\,cm

Answer

4cm4\,cm

Explanation

Solution

Suppose initial height of the water level was HH. Initial position of the observer was LL and final position is LL'

Now for the image to be formed at the same place.
From adjacent figure
x+Hμw=y+hμwx + \frac{H}{\mu_w} = y + \frac{h'}{\mu_w}
(Object distance should be same)
yx=Hhμw\Rightarrow y -x = \frac{H - h'}{\mu_w}
3=Hhμw\Rightarrow -3 = \frac{H - h'}{\mu_w}
hH=μw(3)\Rightarrow h' - H = \mu_w(3)
=46×3= \frac{4}{6} \times 3
=4cm= 4\,cm
Water level increased by 4cm4 \,cm.
