Question
Physics Question on Current electricity
A microammeter has a resistance of 100Ω and full scale range of 50μA. It can be used as a voltmeter or as a higher range ammeter provided a resistance is added to it. Pick the correct range and resistance combination (s)
50 V range with 10kΩ resistance in series
10 V range with 2000kΩ resistance in series
5 mA range with 1Ω resistance in parallel
10 mA range with 1Ω resistance in parallel
5 mA range with 1Ω resistance in parallel
Solution
To increase the range of ammeter a parallel resistance (cal led shunt) is required which is given by
S=(i−igig)G
For option (c)
S=(50×10−3−50×10−650×10−6)(100)≈1Ω
To change it in voltmeter, a high resistance R is put in series,
where R is given by r=igV−G
For option (b), R=50×10−610−100≈200kΩ
Therefore, options (b) and (c) are correct.
