Question
Physics Question on Refraction of Light
A hollow double concave lens is made of very thin transparent material. It can be filled with air or either of two liquids L1andL2 having refracting indices n1andn2 respectively (n2>n1>1)The lens will diverge a parallel beam of light if it is filled with
air and placed in air
air and immersed in L1
L1 and immersed in L2
L2 and immersed in L1
L2 and immersed in L1
Solution
The correct answer is D:L2 and immersed in L1
The lens makers' formula is
f1=(nmnL−1)(R11−R21)
where, nL = Refractive index of lens and
nm = Refractive index of medium.
In case of double concave lens, R1 is negative and R2 is
positive.
Therefore (R11−R21) I will be negative.
For the lens to be diverging in nature, focal length f should
be negative or (nmnL−1) should be positive or nL>nm but
since, n2>n1 x (given), therefore the lens should be filled with
L2 and immersed L1.
