When he takes 8 steps, the displacement is (5 - 3) = 2m.
Time taken for 8 steps = 8 s
∴ Average velocity = 2/8 = 1/4 ms-1
In the last 5 steps the drunkard will not be able to come backward because he would fall in the pit.

= 13 – 5 = 8 m
