It is given in the question that,
mass of coconut=m.
Distance travelled vertically by the coconut = s
Velocity =v
Now, the work done by the coconut due to gravity be Wg=mgs . . . (1)
∴change in velocity of coconut is =21m(u=v)2=−21m(v)2 . . . (2)
Now, we have the total work done on the coconut is equal to change in kinetic energy, hence,
Wa+Wg=21mv2
Where, Wa→work done by air resistance and from (1) and (2)we get,
Wa=21mv2−Wg
Wa=21mv2−mgs
∴Wa=−2m(2gs−v2)
