Solution
Let unknown resistance be X. In first case, if l is the balancing length then, = (100−ℓ)ℓ
X = (100−ℓ)10ℓ …………..(i)
In second case, R = 10 + 12.5 = 22.5 W and
l ' = l – 20
\ = (100−ℓ′)ℓ′ or 22.5X = 100−(ℓ−20)ℓ−20
or X = 120−ℓ22.5(ℓ−20) ……….(ii)
Solving eqs (i) and (ii) we get
l = 60 cm and X = 15W
