Physics Question on Ray optics and optical instruments

A beam of parallel light rays is incident on a solid transparent sphere of refractive index μ\mu . If a point image is produced just at the back of the sphere, what is the refractive index of the sphere?

A

2

B

2.3

C

2.5

D

2.7

Answer

2

Explanation

Solution

Let CC be the centre and P1P_{1} and P2P_{2} the poles of the sphere.
AA ray OAOAparallel to a diameter is first refracted into the glass along ABAB.
For refraction at AA from air to glass, we have
μv1uμ1R\frac{\mu}{v}-\frac{1}{u}-\frac{\mu-1}{R}
Here u=u =\infty
and v=2Rv=2 R
μ2R1=μ1R\therefore \frac{\mu}{2 R}-\frac{1}{\infty}=\frac{\mu-1}{R}
μ2R=μ1R\frac{\mu}{2 R}=\frac{\mu-1}{R}
μ=2μ2\mu=2 \mu-2
μ=2\mu=2
