Arrange the given data in ascending order,

We have 34, 38, 42, 44, 46, 48, 54, 55, 63, 70

Here, median = M =$\frac{46 + 48}{2} = 47$

$(\because n = 10,$ median is the mean of 5^th and 6^th items)

$\therefore$ Mean deviation $= \frac{\Sigma|x_{i} - M|}{n} = \frac{\Sigma|x_{i} - 47|}{10}$

$= \frac{13 + 9 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 7 + 8 + 16 + 23}{10} = 8.6$.
