Question
Chemistry Question on Some basic concepts of chemistry
50.0kg of N2(g) and 10.0kg of H2(g) are mixed to produce NH3(g). Identify the limiting reagent in the production of NH3 in this situation.
A
Nitrogen
B
Hydrogen
C
Can not be predicted
D
None of these
Answer
Hydrogen
Explanation
Solution
The balanced chemical reaction is N2+3H2<=>2NH3 From the above balanced equation, 1 mol of N2(g) reacts with 3 moles of H2(g). ∴ Moles of N2=28gmol−150,000g=1785.71mol or, Moles of H2=2.106gmol−110,000g=4960.3mol ∴1785.7mol of N2 react with 3?1785.7mol=5357.1mol but we have 4960.3mol of H2 only. Therefore, H2 is a limiting reagent.
