Chemistry Question on Quantitative Analysis

0.25 g of an organic compound containing chlorine gave 0.40 g of silver chloride in Carius estimation. The percentage of chlorine present in the compound is ______. [in nearest integer]
(Given : Molar mass of AgAg is 108 g mol–1 and that of ClCl is 35.5 g mol–1

Answer

The correct answer is 40
Mass of organic compound = 0.25 g
Mass of AgCl = 0.40 g
%Cl=35.5×mass ofAgCl143.5×(mass of organic compound)×100Cl=\frac{35.5×mass\ of AgCl}{143.5×(mass\ of\ organic\ compound)}×100
=35.5×0.40×100143.5×0.25=\frac{35.5×0.40×100}{143.5×0.25 }
= 39.581 ≃ 40%
Therefore , Cl = 40 %
